Senior Dog Safety

This site is written by a dog owner, not a veterinarian. Nothing here is veterinary advice, and nothing here diagnoses, treats or cures any condition. Limping, crying out, sudden weakness, dragging a leg, or refusing to walk all need a vet, not a product. Ask your veterinarian before starting any joint supplement, especially if your dog takes other medication, has a fish or shellfish allergy, or has liver, kidney or digestive trouble, and follow the label and your vet on the dose.

Small senior dogs can fall from furniture and from pet stairs. Watch your dog on stairs until they are steady, keep stairs on a surface where they cannot slide, and stop if your dog seems afraid or in pain. Grip socks can twist, trap moisture or cut off circulation if they are too tight or left on too long: check the fit and the paws every day and take them off overnight. A lift harness that is too loose can slip, and one that is too tight can rub the skin or press on the belly, so check for sores and never use it to lift a dog fully off the ground unless your vet has shown you how. Older dogs overheat quickly, so keep walks short and early in hot weather.
